23-year-old British X-Factor alum Grace Davies slipped out of the public eye for a while, but now she’s back and ready to begin a new chapter in her career starting with her first single, “Invisible.”
Davies tackles topics as personal as her own insecurities and as broad as mental health head-on with poignant lyrics that are simultaneously heartbreaking and heartfelt. The songwriter sings about the invisible scars of her past, from body image issues to feeling distanced from her social life. “It’s covered up and hidden tight/Beneath the skin, inside the mind,” she sings describing how her emotions have been buried deep all these years. Yet, Davies is not seeking pity or forgiveness, but rather this is a song about coming forward and being candid no matter what people say.
Before soaring into the chorus, Davies uses auto-tune to create a standstill, enigmatic moment––with the only other sound being the subtle ticking of a clock. As she draws out the word “bruises” right before diving into the next verse, you’ll be left feeling woozy. Towards the end of the song, the singer shows off her vocal chops by hitting some impressive notes, releasing some of the pent-up tension that’s been sealed up inside the artist for so long.
“Invisible” may focus on the more personal parts of Davies life that kept her in the shadows for a while, but it seems that the artist is finally ready to shine a light on some of these issues as she comes into her own as an artist. And we’re ready to watch her rise.
