Get ready to be transported to futuristic rave with Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s new wildly euphoric club track, “Rain on Me.”
Drenched in nylon, leather, and fish nets, Gaga, Grande, and their backup dancers shake and groove to the pulsing beat in a dark, dystopian wonderworld––think Blade Runner meets punk at the Met Ball. Gaga does what Gaga does best by turning up the drama in this video. She switches between dance breaks and a series of alter-ego character storylines that range from a warrior vixen getting stabbed by raining daggers to a cyborg in a chamber of wires.
It’s a mad, mad world in Gaga and Grande’s eyes, but they just keep on dancing and singing through the chaos. While this video was probably filmed way before the pandemic, it feels like an eerily resonant fantastical sign of our times. It’s both retro and dystopian, weird and wonderful, and just the kind of semi-nostalgic escape we could all use about now. Even the lyrics feel oddly symbolic of the present with Gaga doing her best to soak in a positive outlook as she cries out, “I’d rather be dry, but at least I’m alive.”
Grande’s R&B, angelic vocals are the perfect complement to Gaga’s deep and booming vocal prowess. We always knew that one day these pop goddesses would unite, but we never could have expected just how powerful their performance would be. Consider us floored!
