Trevor Daniel: “Falling”

May 29, 2020. Writer: Emma Kopelowicz

At first glance, Houston-native Trevor Daniel’s stratospheric rise-to-fame might just seem like a stroke of good luck. His single, “Falling” off his debut EP from 2018 called Homesick became a viral sensation on TikTok two whole years later. Yet, the singer has been quietly building his music career since his teens when he was just learning to produce tracks from his bedroom. Daniel’s story certainly embodies the phrase “patience is a virtue!”

After blowing up on TikTok, Daniel got right to work on his first full-length album Nicotine which “Falling” is featured on. The track itself pulses with the angst of a teenage lover who has gone through his first break-up. Synths and deep, riveting bass slowly boom in the background as Daniel’s sing-rapping carries the weight of his spiraling emotions. His lyrics expose the raw scar tissue left over from this relationship that has left him broken and hopeless. “My last made me feel like I would never try again,” he wails in the chorus.

Heavy and heartbreaking––Daniel uses this moment to lean into the overwhelming despair he feels to expose the dark side of young love. Trevor Daniel twists and bends his emotions until the last drops of teenage angst are squeezed out into emotive ballads that leave us aching.
